Out of Lights (U2 Discotek vs U2 An Cat Dubh)

If Bono were Bowie (and Onob were Eiwob) and Brian played bass. If the Edge sucked helium and An Cat Dubh lived again.

She-kah!

I'm Pretty Bright (UK alternative Steely hop music box ghost flutes)

Begin with a backwards music box, a beat and a toy piano. Move on into British Invasion alternative rock power chords. Bridge into techno and Steely Danish guitar bends. Revisit UK. Back to kids room. Techno, quiet, ominous... then the British are visited by ghostly reverb music box flutes, notice an ongoing electric lead, back to the Steely Dan hip hop, finish off with another UK serving. Nice recipe.

My Blindness (Blinded by the Light vs My Sharona vs Scorpions No one Like You)

I thought when I played around with Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light, I'd get more out of it, but I only got a few usable samples. I incorporated that with part of "My Sharona" backwards and a guitar loop from the Scorpions' "No One Like You".

AC/DC vs. Nazareth

Version two of the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap remix- after hearing it for a while, I kept wanting to hear that one Nazareth lyric from 'Hair of the Dog': "Now you're messing with a... son of a *****" over it (yes I bleeped it out even tho I don't in the mix). That's the only change in this version.

Gawdilla, DeepZilla, ThugZilla: Godzilla has been good to me

I've found the inspiration for THREE mixes from Godzilla, one of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult songs.

The first has been on Brian Carter Music for a while- "Gawdzilla"- God help us all, I did some spoken word over it (that's the BBC remix vocal version), not quite rap because I have no experience rapping- but some people just can't handle all instrumental music, so this is a bit of an attention holder for them- thus there are two versions of that song.

The second was what I first called "LowZilla" but decided to rename DeepZilla when it had matured. Like the third piece, it centers around a 30% slowing of the part of Godzilla where the vocalist is using delay and saying 'Godzilla, godzilla, godzilla...' etc. But I came up with some funk guitar parts, a bassline, and some moody jazz chords to go along with it. It's the MellowZilla, I suppose. It starts with a pretty funky blacksploitation feel.

The third piece (not out at the time of this writing, but check the mp3 player to see if it's out now) is a combination of the aforementioned delayzilla loop, U2's Bullet the Blue Sky, and Jay Z's Justify My Thug... "Yeah this feels right right here"- the latter two went together quite perfectly. Then I noticed the sample Jay Z used sounded kinda like Love Rollercoaster, so I pulled in some Red Hot Chili Peppers (yes I know it was a cover)- overall sounds like a mish mash but executed together very tight- check it out.

Hymnstract

What makes the hymn part is that two of the main backwards samples are from full-choir hymns. Of course, without my arpeggiated guitar and ebow lead, it wouldn't be what it is- I supposed it's taking the orchestral hymn section out of context and manipulating it that makes the abstract part of the song's title. Throw in driving drums, rhythmic electric guitar, and some attackless washes, and hey, it must be Brian Carter!

AbWah

Me sampling myself. I took one of my bluesy open-tuning riffs and turned it into a sample- it comes in on and off rhythm for variety- threw some effects (and probably reversed it- I don't remember) onto other parts of some of my guitar chords to get something between a slide and a voice...

Holy Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

One of the cooler classic/hard rock rhythm riffs and intros has got to be from AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Here you have it along with some rap scratching, a new age pad and some of that freaky doublevoice monk singing (what's it called?)- the latter is from the free sound project.

GawdZilla

If you don't recognize the sample, you either aren't a Blue Oyster Cult fan, or you don't know classic rock. Most of the samples are from that song, along with some hip hop beats. The mad kick drum is from the free sound project (ice9ine). I think what really makes the remix are the backwards sections- one is a pretty cool lead guitar lick, the other is from the part where Godzilla tears down the power lines. And yes, I really do like the whole power chord progression, but I thought the one section I used was pretty powerful and would make a good rap backdrop.

The Artist Surfs Downhill - My Bloody Valentine meets Coldplay

I'll have you know this is my ideal music right here. I love backwards stuff. I don't need drums all the time. I love that epic U2 Joshua tree sound. It's actually coldplay, backwards, slowed down, lots of echo and delay etc. and of course if you last into the depths of the track, you'll get to where the entire piece gets phased and so on. It's a melodic wall of sound. My Bloody Valentine fans will understand. Brian Eno, Glenn Branca... when the mood is right, there's nothing more empowering. The track is 11 minutes long, too, music fans.

Long John Blues Assist

I call this time of music a "blues assist" because I'm adding something to some historic blues or gospel- like a basketball assist, only matters if I score. Long John is an old slave work song... chilling and compelling. I added some slide guitar that has at times a grungey flavor to it to my own version of Long John. I think one of the most fascinating things about some of these type of old slave and spiritual songs is that the structure of the song itself is improvised- the verse and chorus sections vary in length. Playing along requires serious listening and spontaneity unless you were to write out the structure of the original recording, something I haven't the patience for and I think could kill the spirit of the song anyway.

Sitar Ladder

Sitar Ladder- Thusly named because of the progressive down steps of this sitar sample electronica mp3 from the Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds plus some cool beats and some of my own backwards guitar.

Flash mp3 Music player

Added a pretty cool flash based mp3 player to the top of the site- it streams the mp3's without having to load the whole thing ahead of time, and has a multisong playlist- will keep some of the music I post (maybe all) in there.
